What You Need To Know About Lubricant Additives

Lubricant additives are used to make lubricants last longer, increase the viscosity and reduce friction. Choosing the right additive is crucial – if you get it wrong then you could be causing long-term damage! Lubricant additives are used to modify the performance of lubricants. Some additives prevent wear and rust from forming depending on the additive package. Lubricant additives are used in many ways for different purposes and take on a variety of forms such as solid or liquid. The way a lubricant behaves is based on the additive package that is contained within it.

Lubricants are liquids that keep your engine running smoothly. They reduce friction and allow parts to move without grinding together. Your suspension system needs lubricant, as does your chassis and steering wheel. The different types of additives in the lubricant you choose can make a difference in how well your car runs.

Lubricant additives are a necessary component of three-way metal working applications. This is because any machine that is used in the forging, cutting, or stamping of metals will either have metal shavings or oil sludge build up inside of it once the process has finished. Either of these things will eventually lead to the machine failing depending on its intended use, so, therefore, additive manufacturers try to create Lubricant Additives in order to counteract both problems.

If you work in the three-way metal field then certain lubricants are probably already familiar to you such as penetrants and anti-seize agents. These two products are used very often by workers in shops that deal with metals because they make things much easier when compared to not using them. For example, if someone is working with sheet metal then they need something that keeps them from scraping the edges even though it can be a little bit challenging depending on how they're revving the material around on the lathe or other machine they're using. Most people who work with metals need something like this because it can really improve their quality when dealing with these daily tasks.

Lubricating Additive Materials And What They Do

Lubricating additives are used to improve the performance of lubricants. They do this by making the oil more effective at providing a film of oil on metal surfaces, lowering friction, and reducing wear.

The most common additives are:

1. Anti-wear additives – these are usually ZDDP or zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate compounds that reduce wear in engines. They also increase corrosion protection, especially when using low-sulfur fuels as they prevent corrosion by preventing the formation of sulphuric acid (which is what eats away at your engine). They also help keep piston rings from sticking to cylinder walls and thus reduce blowby.

2. Antifoaming agents – these stop foaming which helps prevent aeration problems. By reducing foaming, it is easier for your oil to reach all parts of your engine without being trapped in one place by bubbles.

3. Corrosion inhibitors – these prevent rusting on steel surfaces such as crankshafts and camshafts by forming a layer over them that stops moisture from getting into crevices where it would otherwise form rust deposits through electrolysis (chemical reaction).

4. Antioxidants – These materials prevent the oxidation of oil molecules, which can cause oil breakdown and the formation of sludge deposits in engines and gearboxes. Antioxidants also prevent the polymerisation of oil molecules into insoluble compounds that can cause filter plugging in hydraulic systems and hydraulic valves sticking open or closed in gearboxes or power steering systems.

5. Dispersants/anti-foam agents – These materials reduce the surface tension of water so that it does not form droplets (foam) but remains as a thin film between moving parts, thereby reducing friction between them.
